About Mr. McCaskey's Visit:

Patrick McCaskey will offer his personal witness to faith as a Christian athlete, husband, father and businessman in this presentation. He will reveal his personal faith journey and how faith is key in the lives of many athletes, coaches, religious leaders and others he has known. Based on his book, Sports and Faith: Stories of the Devoted and the Devout, McCaskey's vibrant presentation will look at decades of spiritual enlightenment and life lessons, recalling with good humor and compassion those who made the cut on and off the field, plus people who left comfortable lives to serve the under-served in extraordinary ways.

Patrick McCaskey is a 37-year veteran and Senior Director of the Chicago Bears and parishioner at the Church of St. Mary in Lake Forest, IL. He is chairman of Sports Faith International, an initiative, which recognizes exceptional athletes who lead exemplary lives. A high school football all-American and record-breaking track star in his youth, McCaskey competes on the masters track circuit.

About His Book:

Patrick McCaskey chronicles his Christian faith experience and its central meaning for him and others in the circle in which he has traveled as an executive of one of sports' most storied franchises. Heroes both on and off the field come to life on the pages of this book. Sports and Faith: Stories of the Devoted and the Devout presents:

  • Devoted Players
  • Inspired Coaches
  • Devout Who Serve Others
  • People Making a Difference

Sports and Faith: Stories of the Devoted and the Devout is a personal chronicle of Chicago Bears Senior Director Patrick McCaskey that looks back at decades of spiritual enrichment and life lessons from athletes, coaches, religious and everyday people. McCaskey recalls the stories of those who strived to make the cut on and off the field—plus people who left comfortable lives to serve the underserved in extraordinary ways.

Here are the stories of team owners George Halas, Art Rooney and Well Mara—plus inspirational players like Brian Piccolo, Bill Wade, Tim Foley, Brian Cabral, and Danny Abramowicz. Also examined are lives of extraordinary people who decided not to pursue a life of sports because they were tugged in another direction—John Smyth, Wayne Gordon, Don Nevins and Joe Freedy. What's more, Sports and Faith: Stories of the Devoted and the Devout looks at some who simply set out to help those who needed help the most: John Perkins, Ignatius McDermott, and others.

Athletes often face difficult lifestyle choices and moral challenges. Many professional sports teams work with religious men and women to help players and staff continue their spiritual enrichment. The Chicago Bears bring in speakers and inspiring men and women who share their faith and life-lessons with players. According to the author, "We don't force feed anyone, but faith is fundamental to our caretaking efforts." The Bears are also involved in many charities that are directed and supported by amazing people from all walks of life. Personal experiences of growing up in an exceptional sports family are also shared. Patrick McCaskey has been at the center of it all. Sports and Faith: Stories of the Devoted and the Devout takes you out on the streets, into the football fields, up to the podiums and in some instances…on your knees. Sports and Faith: Stories of The Devoted and The Devout is Book 1 in a planned series of Sports and Faith books to be published by Sporting Chance Press, Inc.

Student Interns 2011

Meet the 2011 St. Paul Interns.

A testimony to having interns:

Since the fall of 2004, we at St. Paul Catholic Center (the Newman Center at Indiana University) have offered a paid internship in music ministry to undergraduates.  These students have the opportunity to accompany for masses, direct instrumental and choral ensembles, plan the music for liturgies and participate in the liturgy committee.  It has been my great pleasure to mentor our young interns as they learn about the church documents such as Sing to the Lord and the inner workings of being a music minister.  We also provide the opportunity for our interns to attend NPM (National Pastoral Musicians) conventions and other formation/spiritual events such as our local chapter’s pastoral musician retreat during Lent.    I must stress that we are not a financially well-to-do parish; rather we have made a commitment to our internship program because we believe in forming leaders for our Church in the here and now.

In addition, we also strive to include all ages in music ministry.   We are a university parish which means we have a great number of families with children.  It is inspiring to see a string trio of junior high students accompanying the youth choir.  We have teens who sing prayerfully along side the adult resident parishioners during our 10:30 mass.  One of our most successful events was an intergenerational concert that featured sacred music.  Yes, we are doing great things (by the grace of God) and I am proud to be a part of it!

The  invitations we extend  to promising young people might just be the spark that encourages them to be our most responsible, enthusiastic volunteers in the Church.  Our youth are full of talent, energy and Spirit.  We must invest in them NOW so that they might be the leaders of today and tomorrow.
