Newsflash

Let us take this month of April, Autism Awareness Month, to challenge ourselves to learn more about the ways in which we can accommodate the needs of those in our community who experience autism so that they may participate more fully, and to seek out and celebrate the richness of the gifts they have to offer.  This month let us pray for our parish families, that our communities will model the welcoming and inclusive ministry of Jesus, seeking always to see the image of God in every person.  When we grow in our understanding of autism, it will lead to relationships of support and increase a sense of belonging for those who live with autism and their families. If you have a family member who experiences autism or know of parishioners with autism who may need certain accommodations or support to participate in parish life, please call Kara Favata at 317-236-1444 or kfavata@archindy.org.

Some events of 2010 that stand out in our spiritual-social landscape were:
1.    Pedophilia cases revealed in Europe (which we in the USA knew would eventually happen); the scandal found its way to the Pope
2.    The Gulf of Mexico oil spill
3.    Rescue of the 33 Chilean miners
4.    The massacre of many in the Syrian Catholic Church in Baghdad on Oct 31
5.    Election 2010…major change to Congress
6.    Vandalism to Jewish student houses and desecrating sacred texts at IU
7.    Beatification of John Henry Newman, patron of Newman Centers
8.    Health care bill pushed through…truly a cobbled legislation that is a shadow of what was intended
9.    Final draft of new (Third edition) of the Roman Missal (to be initiated in 2011)
10.  Earthquake in Haiti

Happenings at St. Paul during 2010 that are remarkable include:
1.    Meeting of parish leaders in January to identify progress on strategic plan for the next couple of years
2.    Institution of a part-time Communications position and revamp the website
3.    Development office makes contact with 7,000 alumni
4.    St. Charles establishes tuition that is very favorable to our Catholic families
5.    Service of Lamentation to express sorrow over the Bishops’ cover-up of pedophilia

7.    Hosting Matthew Kelly in October

9.    Energy audit of January makes us aware of energy-savings activities and application
10.  Major bequest comes to St. Paul
11.  Volunteer hours of service at St. Paul rises…including about 120 IU students

Some hopes for 2011 include:
1.    Help open a Family shelter in Bloomington under aegis of Catholic Charities
2.    Student Challenge (financial contributions) help the parish close gap of loss of subsidy ($62,000 over three years…ending June 2011)
3.    100 more parishioners experience Christ Renews retreats
4.    More than 150 IU students involved and in ministry and leadership formation
5.    Possible remodel of the church kitchen to be more user-friendly and energy efficient
6.    Taking the implementation of the new Roman Missal as an opportunity to learn more about our liturgical life together and deepen in spirituality
7.    More inclusive multi-cultural exchange, including but also beyond liturgy
8.    Establish five bible study groups on campus
9.    Four more faith sharing groups in parish
